Biography of George N. Lamphere of Moorehed Minnesota

George N. Lamphere, a journalist born in Mystic, Connecticut, on August 23, 1845, served in the Civil War before settling in Moorhead, Minnesota. He published the daily and weekly “News” and served in various governmental roles. Later, he moved to Palouse, Washington, where his son, George N. Lamphere, Jr., resides.


George N. Lamphere, a journalist, was born in Mystic, Connecticut, on August 23, 1845. He served in the Sixteenth Connecticut Regiment during the Civil War and later worked in government departments in Washington, D.C., until 1882. In that year, he settled in Moorhead, Minnesota, where he owned and published the daily and weekly News from 1883 onwards.

He authored a book titled The United States Government, published in 1882. From 1891 to 1892, he served as a director and treasurer of the State Normal School Board in Moorhead. In 1893, he was a commissioner of the World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago. From 1900 to 1907, he served as the secretary of the board of trustees of the Minnesota Soldiers’ Home, residing in St. Paul during that time.

In 1907, he relocated to Palouse, Washington, where his son, George N. Lamphere, Jr., resides.
